Just 18 miles from South Fork, Colorado, Wolf Creek Ski Area sits nestled in the San Juan Mountains and is famous for receiving more snow than any other resort in the state. On Monday, January 27, 2025, the conditions could not have been more perfect. The sky was a rich, dark blue, the temperature hovered around 30 degrees, and the winds were calm. The weather was ideal for skiing, and the mountain was in pristine shape.

Around noon, clouds started to gather over Alberta Peak Summit and slowly drifted northward, signaling the arrival of a storm. Despite the storm looming on the horizon, the base was an impressive 115 inches of snow, and the trails were in top-notch condition. The best part? There was barely anyone else on the mountain. The absence of crowds meant I could ski straight up to the lift without a single person in line—a rare treat in most ski areas.

It was the perfect day to return to the slopes after a 37-year hiatus. I was excited to pick up where I left off, and the conditions made it even more enjoyable. The beginner slopes were freshly groomed, this was where Kristen and Darrick took their ski lessons. These beginner slopes offered smooth, wide runs. The easier runs were perfect for easing back into skiing. Meanwhile, the intermediate slopes had packed powder, creating a fun and challenging ride for my still-strengthening legs.

The Black Diamond runs, however, were a different story. They pushed me to the limit, testing both my balance and stamina, especially with my out-of-shape legs. Still, I loved every minute of it. Overall, it was a wonderful day—great conditions, perfect weather, and the joy of rediscovering a sport that had been out of my life for far too long.
