Skiing 2025

Just 18 miles from South Fork, Colorado, our Skiing was at Wolf Creek Ski Area which sits nestled in the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, on the Continental Divide. They boast it receives more snow than any other resort in the state. On Monday, January 27, 2025, conditions could not have been more perfect. The sky stretched overhead in a rich, dark blue, the temperature hovered around 30 degrees by noon, and the winds remained mainly calm.

Midday Clouds

Around midday, clouds gathered over Alberta Peak Summit and drifted northward, signaling the arrival of an approaching storm. Despite the impending weather, Wolf Creek boasted an impressive 115-inch snow base, and the trails remained in top-notch condition. Even better, the mountain felt nearly deserted. I skied directly to the lift without waiting in line—a luxury that most resorts do not experience. The peaceful solitude, combined with the incredible snow, made for an unforgettable day on the mountain.

Second time in three years

Returning to skiing after a 37-year hiatus felt like reconnecting with an old friend. This marked my second time on the slopes in the past three years, and I felt eager to reclaim the skills that once came so naturally. The beginner slopes, freshly groomed and wide, provided the perfect space to ease back into the sport. My daughter, Kristen, and her husband, Darrick, took their ski lessons on these gentle runs, learning the fundamentals on smooth, forgiving terrain. I started here as well, relishing the easy turns before venturing onto more challenging terrain.

The intermediate slopes, covered in packed powder with a few moguls, presented an exhilarating test for my still-strengthening legs. Navigating each turn, I felt my confidence build with every run. The rhythm of skiing returned, and my excitement grew. However, the Black Diamond runs told a different story. Steep, demanding, and relentless, they pushed me to my limits. My balance wavered at times, and my out-of-practice legs burned with effort, but I embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. Every turn, every drop, and every heart-pounding descent reminded me why I loved this sport.

Wolf Creek Lodge

After an invigorating morning on the slopes, we gathered for lunch at Wolf Creek Lodge with Sharon, enjoying warm food and laughter. After lunch I was able to ski alongside Kristen and Darrick, sharing in their excitement and progress. The joy of rediscovering skiing, combined with perfect conditions and cherished company, made the day truly unforgettable. Wolf Creek had welcomed me back to the sport, and I couldn’t wait for the next run.
