The Crater Lake Trail is located in the South San Juan Wilderness, part of the San Juan National Forest. The trail to the lake spans roughly 3.7 miles from the trailhead on FR 380, located about 26 miles from South Fork, Colorado.
The trail begins with a steep ascent, winding through a forest for the initial 0.2 miles. Beyond this point, the incline becomes more gradual, leading to a consistent climb until the continental divide is reached at 1.1 miles. The journey transitions from a pine forest to an area with tundra-like vegetation, dotted with manzanita bushes. Early morning hikers may encounter mule deer and spot tracks of mountain sheep. With some luck, you may even observe these animals along your hike.
After crossing the Continental Divide, you’ll descend into the South San Juan Wilderness. The Crater Lake Trail reenters the pine forest from the tundra, traversing multiple creeks and open meadows. On the lake’s north side, a bench offers several appealing spots for camping or picnicking. Aptly named, Crater Lake nestles in a crater beneath Long Trek Mountain, Montezuma Peak, Peak 12550, and Peak 12020. A video tour of the lake is available by clicking here
